Kathmandu Guest House remains top of the list for newcomers to Nepal and long standing returnees, all attracted by the wide choice of rooms and convivial atmosphere.

The most popular hotel in Nepal’s capital is situated right at the heart of the lively tourist district of Thamel. Yet, set back from the road at the end of a drive, it is a true oasis of peace where sightseers and trekkers rub shoulders with serious climbers and sometimes celebrities, from pop stars to writers or Oscar-winning actors.

The Kathmandu Guesthouse in Thamel is a cosmopolitan venue, the place to share stories, exchange advice, find a trekking companion or a long lasting romance. Couples who met in the Kathmandu Guesthouse often return for their honeymoon.

KGH Budget to Luxury

The Kathmandu Guest House was the first hotel in Thamel, opening with just 13 rooms in a converted Rana mansion. Today the 120 rooms cater to a range of budgets under a single roof.

Basic and simplicity rooms are just what they mean and have shared bathrooms. Standard rooms offer private facilities, some have air conditioning. Most pleasant are the garden facing rooms, worth a little extra for the view and quiet surroundings. De Luxe rooms have more space and amenities including daily papers. Top of the range are the Super de Luxe with elegant rugs and fresh flowers.

Most rooms come as single, double or triple. Special rates are available for week or month long stays. The basic price does not include charges.

Restaurants at Kathmandu Guest House

The Kathmandu Guest House has several restaurants offering a choice of cuisine. The Bahal Café is for international fare, the Laskus for traditional Newari dishes and there is a popular Coffee and Bakery Shop. The Clay Oven is famous all over town for its pizzas and Indian Tandoori dishes.

From breakfast to dinner, eating is indoors or al fresco, a la carte or buffet. The restaurants are busy at times so it is best to eat early or learn to relax Kathmandu style. Themed evenings are held from time to time and there is a bar for cocktails.

Amenities at KGH in Nepal’s Capital

Amenities at KGH in Nepal’s capital include a shopping arcade for souvenirs, jewelery and books and a barber and beauty salon. Internet is available in public areas and in the small telephone and communication centre. Access can be slow and keyboards with faded letters may be a challenge for non-touch typists.

The greatest asset of the Kathmandu Guest House is its lovely garden, tucked at the back away from the dusty lanes. There are palm trees and lawns, potted plants, statues, delicious pomelos hanging from the trees and roses and dahlias in all shades and colours.

It is a lovely place to unwind on a swing seat or sip Nepali tea under the trees. They say that many articles and books have been written in this garden and it remains the most delightful escape in busy Thamel.
